This session will bring together Ministers of tourism and culture from across the world to discuss and exchange policies and governance models impacting the future of cultural tourism. It will look at the different approaches governments are taking to safeguard cultural heritage and support the development of innovative and sustainable tourism. How are governments implementing the 2030 Agenda through culture and tourism related policies? In an increasingly globalised world, what are the long-term prospects for cultural tourism? And in face of the growing concerns and pressure relating to ‘overtourism’, how can we ensure cultural destinations do not become victims of their own success?
This panel session looks at the relationship between tourism and the transmission of culture. Facing modern challenges of urbanisation, migration, social and demographic changes, how can tourism be a force for good to help safeguard cultural heritage? Panellists will share their experiences from around the world about how tourism stakeholders are working with community groups, practitioners and other tradition bearers to strengthen systems for transmitting culture. The session will provide practical approaches to how tourism and culture stakeholders can work more closely together to support cultural diversity and promote intercultural dialogue.
This session will look at how a healthy balance for tourism can be achieved to accommodate the needs and interests of different stakeholder groups in the community. It will share innovative approaches presented by different perspectives including government, NGOs and private industry. How can destinations enable community voices to be heard and reflected in tourism management? What type of tourism initiatives provide the most effective means for empowering local communities and helping them take ownership and pride in their destinations?
